The slam dunk of all sponsorships

Wangeci Murage, head of business development for Wananchi Programming, Zuku TV; chats about Zuku's Kshs50m sponsorship of the Kenya Universities' Sports Association basketball league, now renamed the Zuku University Basketball League.

Wangeci says the sponsorship moola will cover everything from profiles to training sessions, etc.

·                        Why did Zuku sponsor the basketball league of the Kenya Universities Sports Association?
Two words: Basketball and university. Besides basketball being a great sport that is taking strides in Africa, most if not all of the best players are discovered in high school or university.
·
How did Zuku and KUSA meet and how long did it take for the sponsorship deal to go through? How were the negotiations?
The negotiations went well. It was a win-win for every party, right down to the player so not much deliberation. KUSA was introduced to us by Miles and Associates, and as they say – the rest is history.
·
How long will the sponsorship last?
It’s a 5-year sponsorship.
·
What activities will the Kshs50 million cover?
Lots. From the games to player profiles to the coaches, the referees, university teams, training sessions, breakdown of performances. This is both on the “Baqe” TV show and on ground during the events that will be held countrywide.
·
What objectives does Zuku intend to achieve with this sponsorship?
It only makes sense that investing in this sport and the young players at this time will not only create great television for our audiences through the TV magazine program “Baqe,” but will also help raise the standards of basketball in Kenya and in the greater East Africa and introduce the world to untapped talent.
·
Kshs50 million is a lot of money. How will Zuku ensure that KUSA accounts for each shilling?
Zuku and KUSA have a great working relationship and we are working very closely together to ensure that the money is used as it was intended.
·
There is lots of basketball talent in both girls’ and boys’ high schools as proven in the recently concluded end of first-term ball games at Mang’u High School. Does Zuku have plans to support high schools too?
Absolutely. Zuku, being a local company, is very much committed to investing in local sports and our intentions are open and clear so we are more than happy to work with any sporting institution that wants to grow their game to the next level.
·
Has Zuku locked up the broadcasting rights to televise the KUSA basketball games?
Yes. The university basketball league is exclusive to Zuku. But you can watch the magazine program “Baqe” on Zuku Sports every Thursday at 7:30pm, and for any updates on the Zuku University Basketball League (ZUBL), join us on social media, i.e. Facebook and Twitter (@kusa_basketball).

·
Thanks for chatting to www.afrohoops.blogspot.com, and we wish the sponsorship success
The pleasure is all mine.

Some post-matches pics @final day of ksssa b-ball games.

Above the rim: Upper Hill crew won the 2013 boys' basketball trophy after beating Maseno: 58-40. Eric Omondi, the assistant coach, is the dude in a sweatshirt.

Salute! Big up to the refs for ensuring drama-free matches

Queens of the hills. Shimba Hills won the girls' finals 50-32 against Buru Buru Girls'. The only dude in the pic is Philip Onyango, their coach.
I'm rather unique. Upper's Joseph Ongoro was the boys' hoops MVP.
